If the provisional agreement does not get a majority of votes, it is again up to the rope for GM negotiators and the GM UAW negotiating committee to reach agreement on the objections raised. The four-year contract provides for a signing bonus of more than $8,000, wage increases of 3 per cent in a few years and lump sum payments of 4 per cent in others, as people familiar with the terms have said. You said that it also implies a pathway to stable employment for temporary workers. The agreement with G.M., even if the agreements with Ford and Fiat follow Chrysler, will not end the charge for U.S. President Gary Jones and some of his top lieutenants. Over the past four years, a federal judicial police force has brought corruption charges against several union officials, including a union vice-president sentenced to 15 months in prison. UPDATE 17.10.19, 3:30 p.m.m: Automotive News reports this afternoon that the terms are discussed in the proposed agreement. The UAW GM Council met today for most of the day, but has not yet made a recommendation for a vote on ratification. Under the terms of the interim agreement, the Hamtramck plant near Detroit, which currently employs about 800 people to build the Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Impala, would not close as planned and GM would build its future electric pick-up truck there; but the Lordstown assembly plant in Ohio, with transmission sites in Michigan and Maryland, would close permanently.
GM made a statement to AN in which it said it would continue its battery production projects in Ohio and invest $9 billion in U.S. plants. Wiley Turnage, president of Local 22, which represents 700 workers at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant in G.M. said he hoped its members could quickly return to the chain. However, he said he needed to review the details of the preliminary agreement before deciding on Thursday whether to vote for it, including whether he would force G.M to keep the Hamtramck plant open. The interim agreement, if final, would solve the most immediate challenge Ms Barra faces and should provide security in calculating labour costs over the next four years. Nearly 200 local auto worker executives voted Thursday to send a preliminary agreement with General Motors Co. to members.
GM plans to invest $7.7 billion, which has created and maintained 9,000 jobs, according to the pages of the agreement obtained by the Detroit News. The 2015 contract included an $8.3 billion commitment. The UAW has been on strike since 16 September and the action has idled about 46,000 workers. Disagreements include health care, wages, protection of temporary workers and job security, as well as the union`s demand to stop the importation of genetically modified vehicles from other countries, such as Mexico. The agreement also includes ratification bonuses of $11,000 (compared to $8,000 in 2015) for permanent employees.
